The Air Circles project includes a live stream performance by Jutta Ravenna with Roberta Busechian from the wind turbine in Birkholz to the Errant Sound Gallery and back to the wind turbine, which is tuned to the specific acoustics of both spaces.
It will end with an artist talk, hosted by Prof. Dr. Sabine Sanio, Sound Studies programme at the UdK Berlin.
Sounds, tones and noises arise from moving air. Based on Helmholtz’s experiments with sirens, which he describes in his 1882 essay On the Sensations of Tone, where he describes the transition from the sensation of separate air blasts to a continuous sound, in contrast, Air Circles focuses on rhythm.
The sounds of the wind turbine are recorded on site by Roberta Busechian with microphones processed live in the gallery in an improvisation with Ravenna and her special equipment: mobile and rotating loudspeakers (Leslie loudspeakers, which are dismantled from historic Hammond organs and digitally controlled). The speakers, which rotate at different speeds, are installed horizontally to transform and vary the vertical rotational sound of wind turbines. The slow beats of the massive rotor blades are superimposed at a low frequency on the medium-frequency pulsation of the air patterns in the sound installation.
