For its third edition, The Listening Biennial brings together sonic, visual and performative works by an international cohort of artists for a week-long program of collective listening. Aiming to foster experimental, restorative practices, The Listening Biennial offers a hospitable, participatory space for deep breaths and slow talk, and for listening-with the vibrant matters of our planetary world. Comprised of audio works and artistic installations presented throughout the building of Ballhaus Ost, an informal talk series taking place under the trees, and an evening program of live performances and experimental sounds, we invite audiences into a listening journey full of poetic voices, stories, noises and songs. In particular, The Listening Biennial works at building greater listening cultures, nurturing radical openness and compassionate action.

The Listening Biennial is an artistic project focusing on listening as a creative practice. It consists of a network of international partner institutions and organizations, with its main base in Berlin. Central to the project is bringing focus to listening as a critical activity that contributes positively to enriching individual lives as well as building bridges across society. This includes recognizing how important listening is for overcoming conflict and peace building, for supporting education and learning, as well as greater physical and emotional health, and for nurturing ecological sensitivity and how we may coexist with other living things. Through its ability to ameliorate situations of crisis by deepening empathy and understanding, listening is essential to democracy as a project of social justice. The Listening Biennial presents public programs which involve audiences in experiencing different ways of listening, to encounter voices and life stories from a diversity of people and cultures, and to reflect about listening as a transformative power which can help address current crises and how we can better hear each other.

Zur dritten Ausgabe bringt “The Listening Biennial” eine internationale Gruppe von Künstler*innen mit klanglichen, visuellen und performativen Arbeiten für ein einwöchiges Programm des kollektiven Zuhörens zusammen. Ziel ist es, experimentelle und regenerierende Praktiken zu fördern. “The Listening Biennial” bietet einen gastfreundlichen, partizipativen Raum für tiefes Durchatmen, langsames Sprechen – und für ein Mit-Zuhören auf die lebendige Materie unseres Planeten.
Die Veranstaltung umfasst Klangarbeiten und künstlerische Installationen im gesamten Gebäude des Ballhaus Ost, eine informelle Gesprächsreihe unter Bäumen sowie ein Abendprogramm mit Live-Performances und experimentellen Klängen. Das Publikum ist eingeladen zu einer Hörreise voller poetischer Stimmen, Geschichten, Geräusche und Lieder.
Insbesondere engagiert sich ”The Listening Biennial” für den Aufbau einer verstärkten Zuhörkultur, die radikale Offenheit und mitfühlendes Handeln fördert.

“The Listening Biennial” ist ein künstlerisches Projekt, das das Zuhören als kreative Praxis in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Es besteht aus einem Netzwerk internationaler Partnerinstitutionen und Organisationen und hat seinen Hauptsitz in Berlin.
Zentral ist dabei, das Zuhören als kritische Tätigkeit hervorzuheben, die das individuelle Leben bereichern und gesellschaftliche Brücken bauen kann. Dazu gehört auch das Erkennen der Bedeutung des Zuhörens bei der Überwindung von Konflikten, beim Aufbau von Frieden, zur Unterstützung von Bildung und Lernen, zur Förderung der physischen und emotionalen Gesundheit sowie zur Entwicklung eines ökologischen Bewusstseins und des Zusammenlebens mit anderen Lebensformen.
Zuhören kann durch das Vertiefen von Empathie und Verständnis Krisensituationen entschärfen – und ist daher essenziell für die Demokratie als Projekt der sozialen Gerechtigkeit.
“The Listening Biennial” präsentiert öffentliche Programme, die das Publikum in verschiedene Arten des Zuhörens einbeziehen, um Stimmen und Lebensgeschichten aus unterschiedlichen Kulturen zu begegnen – und über das Zuhören als transformative Kraft nachzudenken, die helfen kann, aktuelle Krisen anzugehen und ein besseres Miteinander zu fördern.
